President’s Message.

Welcome to the March 2024 newsletter, the equinox has just passed and some of the plants in the Parks are waiting patiently for the rain that is still a few weeks away.

In writing this update, I am pleased to report that Work Orders have been issued to our Contractors to continue Free a Tree work in Amber’s Gully, continue our Bandicoot project in Morialta and consolidate recent gains at the top of Horsnell Gully. Further contractor work is also planned later in the year, with the addition of Olive work at Crag Care. 


Last weekend I was pleased to support the Trail Care group out along the Colonial Track. This work is undertaken by the Trail Runners of SA, and over the last few years they have contributed a few hundred hours of work to this site. It is fantastic to see the elimination of mature broom and Gorse, and the follow up occurring each year. A few rose to the challenge of freeing some Tassel Sedge from the blackberry along the creek, and in just an hour or so another 20m of the creek was cleared. It’s great to see FoBHM and TRSA combining their energies to work together. 



This morning (Easter Sunday) provided a contrast, with a small group completing a woody weed patrol in the Pylon Track Project. This is a real test of our “weed eye” as this is in good bush, weed numbers are low and often difficult to spot. In good bush like this, I am amused at how often I find that I stop walking and a weed is at my feet, somehow my eyes have seen the weed and directed my feet to it. 

Whilst these 2 events take place in different bush, they are both similar in bushcare approach. Identify the good plants, treat the weed threats, share experiences and make sure there is some enthusiasm left to do it again next time. 

Our efforts are not just focused on “the Parks”, but also on succession within the group. This year Ben is undertaking a course of study, and as part of that study he is required to undertake a 150 hour work experience activity. Ben has chosen to investigate Olive Hill and prepare a report for the Committee During this time we will facilitate a range of meetings with a range of stakeholders to allow him to broaden his skills, knowledge and experience in leading volunteer bush regeneration. It’s great to be able to support a member of the next generation of Bushcarers in this way.
